3 critical areas in a Fengshui audit

In home Feng Shui, there are 3 critical areas to be carefully considered as these will have adverse affect on one’s family fortune & wealth.  They are:

1.  Main Door (门)

2.  Master Bedroom (主)

3.  Stove(灶)

Basic Airflow (Qi) Concept

It is important to direct and maintain good airflow into your house important areas without leaking out too much or too fast.  For poor/ bad airflow, either filter them out or convert them into good airflow before flowing into the house to lessen the impact.  A pinball analogy is illustrated below. Airflow concept Imagine above illustration is your house floor plan. Purple ball will play the role of  main airflow that is going through your main door. The other 3 sets of colors spots represent your family fortune such as wealth (green), luck (light blue) and health (yellow).  These are the areas you want the air flow to go to.  Blockers such as sofa, table, cabinet, partition or chair  are used as agents to redirect airflow course of direction. Usually, windows are the one where airflow generally exits (unless the wind is mainly blowing through here).  Thus explain why some Feng Shui re-arrange furniture for airflow purpose and path walkway (explain later). Give that you understand the above basic concept of airflow aka Qi(气) , there are 2 other spots that are important in living room.  They are direct wealth(明财位) spot and indirect wealth(暗财位) spot where the airflow should flow to.  To learn more about the 2 spots, you can read in this article.

Main Door (门)

The only door in a house that has the highest frequency of entrance and exits.  Due to this reason, usually it will be first pathway to receive airflow aka Qi (气) from external environment.  A good airflow will enhance family fortune such as wealth, luck and health.  A poor/ bad airflow will disrupt the harmony and bring down one’s family fortune.  As such, Feng Shui placed a high importance on the main door during a house audit. Generally, Feng Shui master will be sharing audit changes at the main door by first deciding nature of the air flow (good or poor/ bad) during an audit.  A general rule of thumb  would be to avert the bad first then invite the good. Few examples that determine poor/bad airflow:

1.  Directly facing another main door

2.  Directly facing rubbish dump area

3.  Directly facing narrow airway/ pathway between 2 buildings

4.  Directly facing an incoming road

5.  Directly facing some sharp features such as triangle rooftop/ building corner

6.  Directly facing house toilet door

7. Smelly/ messy shoe rack

8. Door in poor/ spoilt condition

9. Others – To learn more, you can read our main door Sha Qi (煞气) article.

Few simple ways to avert this:

1.  Placing some plants (e.g. Cactus, Butterfly orchids) to block them

2. Placing traditional Feng Shui items such as 山海镇 (not advisable as your neighbor might put another to counter you and cause more disharmony)

3.  Setting up semi transparent partition (depending on situation)

4. Tilting the door; require renovation, may also relate to Life Gua(本命卦)

5. Others

To invite/ enhance the good airflow, normally audit is done either inside/ outside the door:

1. Placing a red floor mat (usually, ancient coins(五帝钱). talisman or some lucky charms are hidden below.  This depends on Feng Shui Style)

2.  Placing a red light or bright white/ yellow light

3.  Hanging a wind chime

4.  Placing a wall-like partition(玄关) / cabinet display/ wall display (this topic will be in our next article)

5.  Placing fish tank filled with a defined number of fishes/ water feature items such as rotating ball water fountain

6.  Others

Master Bedroom (主)

Second critical area is the master bedroom; the physical space where house owner and partner spend their resting time & intimacy.  Airflow would not be the primary consideration here, though it is still important. Main factors to take note:

1.  Sleeping direction

2.  Ample walk way path coming down from both sides of the bed

3.  Ample walk way path in the entire room with no obstacles

4.  Balance of brightness/ dimness in the room according to day/ night time

5.  Neat & Clean environment

6.  Clothes well kept & hidden

7.  Good air ventilation

8.  Others

  Best to avoid:

1.  Beam or pillar facing the bed

2.  Mirror facing the bed/ directly facing the bedroom door

3.  Toilet too near the bed

4.  Over cluttering of stuff/ clothes/ books/ plants

5.  Sleeping direction (head/ leg) facing the door/ window

6.  Height of the bed too close to the floor

As for sleeping direction, highly depends on the Feng Shui master engaged.  Generally, master will use the following to audit but this need to be practical as layout of bedroom such as door, toilet and window directions need to be assessed.  A rule of thumb here is practically needs to be review and then Feng Shui.

1.  Zodiac (生肖)

2.  Bazi (八字)

3.  Home/ Landform (居家)

4.  Flying Stars (飞星)

5.  Yi Jing (易经)

6.  Others

Stove(灶)

Last critical consideration is the stove which ideally be placed in a kitchen (will be discussed in next article) for cooking.  Stove in Feng Shui represents the female house owner and the relationship in the house. Below illustrate an image which is considered as 1 stove.  Only 2 units of the below image will be considered as 2 stoves.   Best to avoid:

1.  2 stove units – indicate husband may be in an infatuation/ frivolous relationship

2.  Stove placing near the sink – indicate disharmony in the house resulting in frequent quarrels

3.  Seen from main door – indicate wealth leakage and poor health; should be well hidden in view when standing outside main door

4.  Beam on top of stove – indicate poor health

5.  Facing bedroom – indicate poor health

6.  Placing too near toilet – indicate poor health & wealth leakage

7.  Facing window/ beside window- indicate wealth leakage

8.  Lower than kitchen top – indicate wealth leakage

9.  Facing fridge – indicate wealth leakage as fridge represent wealth

10.  Facing mirror – indicate may have fire disaster in future (天门火)/ becomes 2 stove units

11.  Facing altar – disrespect to the ancestors/ kitchen god

There are times when situation forces the house owner to cook in a non kitchen space.  Examples such as studio apartment, Hong Kong infamous coffin home where toilet, bathroom and kitchen in one small physical space.  Best advise to move out if there is a chance.   Hopefully, above article provide you a general guidelines with insights for you to consider carefully during a house audit.
